Adelaide friends and family, come for a (very) casual gathering to celebrate the launch of On Gallant Wings by Helen Edwards, at the Gums Reserve War Memorial Garden, Shakespeare Avenue, Gums Reserve, Tranmere, 5073. The War Memorial Garden is on the eastern side of the park and we will be nearby the walls containing the Armed Forces Insignias, The Ode and Dedication plaques. We will advise of changes to plan in the case of bad weather. There is a basketball ring, bike track and playground for the kids.
BYO chairs, picnic rug, drinks and snacks. Chat about the history behind On Gallant Wings with Helen, buy a signed copy of the book, and celebrate the women, men and animals who went to war.
I'm delighted to be presenting a session at the National Education Summit Diverse Learners' Symposium on 28th August in Melbourne.
My session is:
Do You See Me? Why Diverse Books are Important
Knowing you are not alone through connection with others who understand you is an important part of understanding yourself. All children and young people should see themselves in books. In particular books featuring diverse characters who are the heroes of their own stories, within themes and topics of interest, such as history, nature and magic, can increase engagement with literacy. In this presentation Dr Helen Edwards will use her personal experiences, professional background in mental health, and current work as a children’s author, to highlight the importance of ensuring diverse learners see themselves in stories, feel connected to others who understand them, and become engaged in reading and writing their own stories.
