House Tour, Sarah’s Vintage Upcycled Bedroom
Even if you have only one room to play with, you can make it your own. Starting with your bedroom in the home you grow up in, is often where many of us get the first bite of the rearranging bug! I spent many an hour creating zones in my bedroom as a teen. This is a wonderful tour of a vintage upcycled bedroom, proving that you can work with what you have to create a dreamy room. Sarah has undertaken to transform her room in her parent’s country home with upcycled and vintage decor, and has done an amazing job! Hope you enjoy and find some inspiration.
Sarah is 22 years old and when studying her diploma in interior design and decoration, she moved home to her parent’s country home in rural NSW to study and work on some projects. “This house is quite old and rickety so it needed a lot of work” says Sarah, but she found it was easier than expected and that she could use this to her advantage. The look she was going for was a rustic/upcycled country feel.
“Finding my inspiration was easy as I had found an old rusty screen door in the backyard which gave me the idea to use a lot of recycled goods” says Sarah. She began with painting the room in a classic white, as she feels everything looks better against a white canvas! Then she found her pieces for decorating -the old screen door was the perfect piece for a bed head. She painted it with matte black spray paint and attached it to the wall. The bed was originally wooden, which she also painted matte black to make a statement against the white interior.
Sarah added a few cushions to bring colour and that was the bed done! The rest was simply finding pieces to match her rustic style. “I found an old cupboard which I sanded back slightly, and the old mirror above we have had lying around for years, which just tied in together perfectly” explains Sarah.
The gorgeous vintage curtains were picked up from the op shop for $5 (bargain!) and the wooden tabs on the tops brought the natural look into the room. An old table cloth and a maroon scarfe hanging from the middle curtains gave them some texture. The old table that Sarah has used as a desk was found outside covered in junk, but she could see it had potential, which is the key to an upcyclers eye.
Sarah found the white cane chair one day on a run to the local dump! She decorated it with a piece of material over a cushion, which tied in nicely. The artwork above the desk is actually a piece of chipboard she also found at the dump and painted over, enhancing the “chips” with maroon and white paint, and all hung by some natural rope. The piece of rusty metal which she hangs her jewellery off she found in the backyard, along with the rusty plant hanger attached to the roof, to bring some greenery into the room. A few old suitcases Sarah’s dad had collected were stacked up to create great storage, as well as a great decorative item, along with the ladder she picked up from a garage sale for $10.
The metal bedside table came out of her dad’s shed, where it was covered in cob webs and filled with old tools, yet Sarah thought – that is just perfect for a bedside table! The other decorating pieces are Sarah’s before the makeover and were sitting in a pile, just waiting for her to put them to good use. The flooring is a peel and stick flooring from Bunnings, which she laid herself and says this is the easiest flooring she has ever used, and highly recommends. All in all the only cost for the room was for the paint and the flooring- everything else has been upcycled or reused to create this gorgeous rustic country bedroom! It took her about 2 weeks.
