Garage Sales, Vintage Cars & Making Memories

20131006_092658

Over the October long weekend we were very lucky to be able to spend it with family at our beach shack on Yorke Penninsula in South Australia, where I grew up. My parents bought the shack when I was only 9 years old and the past few years, have added an upper storey extension, giving us more room to move with the children and better views of  the sea.

We usually get time to go every season and sometimes, more often. Long weekends and school holidays are wonderful times for the children, spent at the beach with us and their Grandparents. All three of my boys have had many lovely days, digging in the sand, building castles to see if we can fill the moats with water and tunnel through to the other side, looking for crabs, swimming and floating in the very safe Bay, riding in boats,  snorkeling, playing charades, cards, eating ice creams, garage sale and op shopping and visiting the many lovely close by beaches. Maxwell, just turned 5, nearly BURSTS with excitement when a shack trip is coming up, as he knows he will have all of us together and the sea.

The past few years each October long weekend, the little town near our shack has a WHOLE town garage sale! This means about 20 – 30 houses.  On the same day over at another town, 5 minutes away, is the annual “Show and Shine and Gala Day” – where the local blokes bring out their vintage and other hot cars, motorbikes and even trucks, as well as family activities and fun. So it is all happening!

Not only are these special times for our children, but this memory building is so important for all of us. We need to have rituals, regular places we go, things we do together, memories to look back on and experiences that are shared. It is what life is all about. And if it involves some vintage and garage sale shopping then all the better for me!

This time, Mum and I also started some craft projects which I will share on the blog this week. I bought 2 old vintage wooden lawn chairs which I am going to renovate and will share that project as I get stuck into it as well.

Here is a snap shot of our day. I was too busy looking at most places (or they did not have much of interest by the time we got there!) to take shots of the entire garage sale town! But these were my two faves and the Vintage Cars as well.

Hope you had a wonderful one too. Do you have a special place you go with your family? Or where you went as a child? Would love to hear 🙂
